While traveling along California's Pacific Coast Highway south of Carmel, I found myself on a stretch of road where there was a noticeable dip. At that moment, I noticed on the left a tall, white tower rising above the tree line, and a beautiful church nestled in the rolling hills. Here, in the midst of ocean and hills, was an awesome and beautiful view, the chapel of the Carmelite Monastery known as “Carmel by the Sea.” It is the first Carmelite monastery for nuns on the west coast, established over 75 years ago.
I took this picture of St. Francis peacefully gazing towards the Pacific Ocean on a cool, fog-laced morning at the Monastery. I titled this image “Pacific Contemplation.”
