While in Venice this summer, I visited the Island of San Michele. It is known as the “Cemetery Island” and was established by Napoleon. It is now maintained by the Franciscans. It is the home of one of Venice’s first Renaissance buildings, the Church of San Michele, built in 1492.
The church is at the corner of the island with a series of beautiful gardens. The cemetery is filled with hundreds of thousands of tombs--- some lavishly monumental, with domes and sculptures and wrought-iron gates. It is a peaceful and calm space which I walked from one side of the island to the other. It is just a short one ferry stop from the hustle and bustle of Venice, but it is worlds apart.
While at San Michele I took this image of a very old statue which I titled “Venice Angel".
